Launch Complex 20 was originally built for Titan II launches and was abandoned in 1994. Spaceport Florida Authority retained W&J Construction to renovate the complex for commercial quick-reaction launch capabilities — supporting Castor 120-sized booster rockets and smaller.
We demolished the unusable portions of the structure, made improvements to the existing road systems, and modified and refurbished the existing launch pad. In addition, we built a haulerway, a new pre-engineered assembly building for small-payload preparation and storage, and a new launch pad.
Construction Management delivery on a live aerospace site requires an operating cadence most general contractors are not prepared for. Range safety, pad clearances, coordination with adjacent launch operations — all while holding to the schedule. It held.
