Project brief

A fairly complex and challenging project for its size and scope.

The Brevard Community College Palm Bay campus expansion added 87,000 square feet of Library, Science, and Chemistry/Biology facilities adjacent to Interstate 95. The three-story building is stabilized by augered pilings and constructed of precast concrete beams set into cast-in-place columns and reinforced beams.

Aluminum curtainwalls and cantilevered balconies offered unique challenges. Lab areas include the latest technological equipment and required careful coordination of mechanical and electrical systems. The exterior has an applied insulated finish system with accent coloring and trim. The ground floor has patterned exposed concrete patio areas.

Third-floor chemistry and biology labs included fume hoods, acid storage cabinets, and glass piping for chemical wastes and vent lines — all linked to the computerized communication system that ties the third floor to the library and BCC's other campuses.

Interior construction is metal stud and drywall with extensive mechanical, electrical, plumbing, sprinkler, security/fire-alarm, and elevator systems. Every system — code-critical to code-optional — was delivered to spec.
